Newark Man Gets Eight Years For Killing 31-Year-Old Hillside Man: Prosecutors

A 33-year-old Newark man was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday, Jan. 26 after being convicted of fatally shooting a 31-year-old Hillside man in 2021, authorities said.

On July 22, 2021 at 10 p.m., Hillside police responded to the 1400 block of North Broad Street and found Steven Zimmerman suffering from a fatal gunshot wound, Union County Prosecutor William Daniel and Hillside Police Department Officer in Charge.

Lashonda Burgess-Mason said. Zimmerman was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Darrius Easterling was later captured at Newark Liberty International Airport. He was convicted of second degree manslaughter after originally being charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, authorities said.
